What’s Needed

In order to open up a checking account you need to provide the bank with some basic information. The bank will not allow you to open an account unless you give them personal details about you.
This will normally include:
- Your Name
- Your Address
- Your social security number
- Date of Birth
- An valid Drivers License or a Government ID.
- A second form of ID that might consist of a Work ID, School ID, Utility Bill with your name and address or a Major Credit or Debit Card
- Place of employment
If you chose to open an account online instead of going into the bank then you just enter the required information and into a text-box. After you have given the bank your information, then you must agree to the terms and conditions.
Opening a checking account online you will most likely have to print off, sign and mail in or hand deliver the documents to the bank before your account will be opened. Some banks will use electronic disclosure, but most banks still will not open your account until you have mailed or personally delivered in the documents.
It important to remember that you can’t access your account until the bank has received the required documents and if you make a deposit by mail without sending the paper work you will have no access to your funds.
Just about anyone with above minimum information can get a checking account. Make sure you have all that is needed and if you are not sure what you need, calling the bank beforehand could save you a headache in not having what is needed when you open your checking account.
